UNIVA Orchestra Program

The UNIVA Orchestra Program started in 2011 through the joint efforts of the Rotary Club Puerto Vallarta Sur and UNIVA University in Puerto Vallarta, one of the most prestigious universities in Jalisco. The program is headed by Rotarian Luis Zuñiga who, in his educational work as the Director of UNIVA, is concerned with comprehensive learning for local youth.

Music has always played an important role in learning and culture, and it has the ability to influence behavior and emotions. In addition to nourishing the soul, music serves as a tool to keep children and young people away from other "activities" such as alcohol, drugs, and other bad influences.

The program started with a donation of a few instruments and with instructors provided by UNIVA. The program had so much interest initially that students had to share instruments and take turns at learning theory and to read music, and at playing the instruments.

All are welcome and there is no cost for the students to participate in the program.

Over the years, the program has been supported with both financial donations and donations of new and good quality used instruments. The program has expanded to other communities and now also provides music education and instruments to students of the Volcanes Community Education Program and the students of Secundaria 81.

The UNIVA Orchestra Program has provided musical entertainment through various performances in Puerto Vallarta over the years.

There is a continuing need for the donation of musical instruments as the program grows and expands into additional communities. Visitors traveling to Mexico are able to bring one musican instrument each, duty free.
